What is the Process for Custom-Built Aquariums?
The process for getting a custom-built aquarium starts with you. If you call or come into our design center, we will start by looking at what you want. Are you looking for a smaller fish tank or one that dominates the whole room? Would freshwater or saltwater fish be better for you? Are you in need of an aquarium for your office or lobby? The answers to these questions will inform us how to best proceed.
Once we’ve come up with what you are looking for, we will set about designing it. We’ll examine your space and, going off what you want, design a layout that meets your standards.
We can consult with you on your space either at your home, office, or on-location at Living Art Aquatics in Crystal Lake, IL.
While the aquariums are assembled off-site, our cabinetry work is done in-house. Cabinets add flair to any aquarium, and we build them right here for you. Each of the cabinets matches up with how you want your aquarium to look.
We love working with you from start to finish. We are there every step of the way!
What Size Ranges Am I Looking At?
Our custom-built aquariums are tailored to your specifications. We have handled fish tanks that are 5-gallons, and we’ve handled fish tanks that are 5,000-gallons. The size of the aquarium depends solely on what you have space for and what your budget is like.
We have the resources to design and build anything you want. That includes shapes as well. We have worked with several different residences and homes that have unique areas where it might have looked impossible to fit an aquarium. Our custom aquarium builders can meet your specifications as well.
Are you looking at a round area for your aquarium? We can do that! Are you looking at putting the fish tank in your wall as part of the décor? We can do that as well! We have terrific resources for whatever space you have available.
Should I Get an Acrylic or a Glass Aquarium?
We have found there is about a 50/50 split on whether or not you should get acrylic or glass aquariums. Each one has tremendous benefits for the aquarium. It depends on your preference.
An acrylic aquarium is stronger and clearer than glass. We can also do different shapes, such as bending the curvature, with acrylic. Acrylic weighs less than glass, so where you’re putting your aquarium might affect which one you choose. Acrylic is also shatter-resistant, which means it is harder to break. However, a glass fish tank is more durable against scratches than acrylic.
What are the Prices for Custom-Built Aquariums?
The cost of the project depends on what you are looking for. Quality aquariums cost more money, but, overall, give a better viewing experience.
The process also takes into consideration your personal budget. How much are you willing to spend on a quality aquarium? We also look at the space allotted, what materials are needed, what the filtration requirements will be, and the location. All of these factors go into determining the price of your aquarium.
How Long Will It Take?
From start to finish, a typical project takes about four to six weeks. We also consider the timeline of the outside company assembling the aquarium and factor that into the range. If the outside company is busy or backlogged with orders, it might take a bit longer.

What Should a First-Time Aquarium Owner Buy?
For first-time aquarium owners, we look at all the factors listed above and determine what would be the best course of action. Generally, we recommend for your aquarium a fish-only community. These are either freshwater or saltwater fish.
We also work with you after the installation of your aquarium. We are a full design company, and we want to work with you on owning a successful aquarium. Our trained technicians will teach you proper aquarium maintenance to keep your tank looking great for a long time.
